Voice as a Portal
Connecting to inner and outer Nature through song

Our voices are our most primal way of dialoguing with Nature consciousness. No words, just pure expression of our innermost self in that moment. We have lost the ability to sing in this way because singing has become purely performative. I’m definitely not a performative singer, and it took me time to regain the freedom I felt singing as a child and to express myself in my natural voice. When I was little I used to sing to plants, beetles, and the stars; it was private and yet beautifully universal.
When I grew older, my singing was still free but became confined to joining in with the radio while driving alone in my car; it was a safe space, and no one judged what I sounded like.
Then something happened when I moved to England 22 years ago: my singing voice became inextricably and completely blocked. I remember the first time I drove by myself in England with the radio on; I couldn’t sing anymore—it came out in a cracking whisper. No matter what I tried, my voice remained blocked for almost 20 years.
I spontaneously started singing again by this beautiful tamarind tree one day last year and continued to visit regularly. My singing has become more free, joyful, and connected with the strong supportive presence of the tamarind. It has been a beautiful experience to connect with tree wisdom in this way, feeling pure acceptance and wordless dialogue. I use my voice in healing sessions now for myselfand others and feel Nature consciousness channeled through me.
I decided to share this intimate video because I don’t have a performance voice, and I feel that normalizing all voices as beautiful is a medicine we need. Our voices are the unique expression of our soul; they offer healing for ourselves and for others and remind us of where we come from.
If you haven’t sung for a while, why not give it a try? Next time you’re out in Nature, find a friendly tree, close your eyes, breathe together for a little while, and then let your voice express whatever comes. It will be beautiful no matter how it sounds, because it will be true and it will be you.
